Growing up in a family of Lebanese immigrants who built their livelihood peddling hand-knotted oriental rugs door to door across the American Midwest, Doug was immersed in the world of oriental rugs from the time he was a young boy. His grandfather, father, and uncles were his first teachers — showing him how to read a rug's origin in the geometry of its pattern, how to assess quality by the density and evenness of its knots, and how to recognize the pieces that were truly exceptional among the merely beautiful.

That education was earned, not handed to him. It came from decades of handling thousands of rugs, learning the distinctions between Persian, Turkish, Afghan, and tribal traditions, and developing the kind of eye that can't be taught in a classroom or acquired from a catalog.
